What Junk Removal Companies Won't Take in West Palm Beach

The categories that require special disposal in Palm Beach County — and where to take them instead.

Most household junk is fair game for a professional junk removal crew: furniture, appliances, electronics, renovation debris, yard waste, and general clutter. But a handful of material categories require specialized disposal that puts them outside the scope of standard junk removal — not because companies are being difficult, but because Florida regulations and environmental requirements mandate specific handling processes that a general hauler isn't licensed or equipped for. Knowing what falls outside standard junk removal helps you plan a cleanout that doesn't hit unexpected stops.

Hazardous Household Waste

Paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and similar hazardous materials cannot go into a standard junk removal truck or a general landfill. These materials require collection through Palm Beach County's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program, which operates free drop-off events and permanent collection facilities across the county.

In West Palm Beach and surrounding Palm Beach County communities, the Solid Waste Authority operates HHW collection events — check the SWA website for current schedules and locations. The drop-off is free for county residents and accepts a broad range of household hazardous materials. If you're doing a garage cleanout and find old paint cans, WD-40 accumulated over 20 years, pool chemicals from an old system, or motor oil in jugs, these go to the HHW program — not in our truck.

Asbestos-Containing Materials

Pre-1980 construction materials in West Palm Beach homes — floor tiles (particularly 9x9 inch vinyl tiles), popcorn ceiling texture, pipe insulation, and some roofing materials — may contain asbestos. Asbestos is regulated under both federal EPA rules and Florida Department of Environmental Protection requirements. Disturbing and hauling asbestos-containing materials without proper abatement violates federal law and creates serious health risks for anyone exposed to the fibers.

If you're renovating an older West Palm Beach home and are uncertain whether materials contain asbestos, a licensed asbestos inspector should test before demo begins. If asbestos is confirmed, a licensed abatement contractor removes and disposes of the materials before any junk removal crew can haul the remaining renovation debris. This applies particularly to the older CBS homes in Lake Worth, Riviera Beach, and West Palm Beach's established neighborhoods that were built during decades when asbestos was common in building materials.

Tires

Florida regulates tire disposal separately from standard solid waste. Tires cannot go to a standard landfill in any quantity. Old tires — from vehicles, lawn tractors, or accumulated in a garage — should go to an auto parts retailer (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts), a tire shop, or a designated tire drop-off event. Palm Beach County's Solid Waste Authority also periodically hosts tire collection events for county residents. We'll let you know about the tire situation when we see them during a cleanout walk-through.

Medical Sharps and Biohazardous Waste

Used needles, lancets, and other sharps from at-home medical care require disposal through licensed medical waste channels — not in a junk removal truck. Palm Beach County pharmacies and healthcare facilities participate in sharps disposal programs. If a cleanout involves the home of someone who was managing a medical condition requiring injections, this category needs to be identified and separated before our crew begins work.

Large Quantities of Concrete and Heavy Construction Materials

Standard renovation debris — broken tile, drywall, moderate quantities of concrete from a patio demo — is within our scope. Very large quantities of concrete (full slab removals, large foundation sections) approach weight limits that require a different hauling approach. Call us to discuss volume if you're dealing with large concrete quantities — we'll advise on what's within our scope versus what requires a specialized concrete hauler.

Propane Tanks

Small propane tanks (the kind used for portable grills) that are not fully empty cannot go in a junk removal truck. Full or partially full propane tanks require proper handling — propane suppliers typically accept tank returns, and many home improvement stores have propane exchange programs. Empty, completely depressurized tanks may be accepted at scrap metal facilities. Let us know if you have propane tanks in a cleanout and we'll advise on the right disposal path.

Refrigerants — A Note on Appliances

This is worth clarifying: refrigerators, window AC units, dehumidifiers, and other refrigerant-containing appliances are within our scope — but only because we carry EPA-certified refrigerant recovery equipment. The refrigerant itself cannot be released into the atmosphere (it's regulated under EPA Section 608). We recover it before the appliance is moved. A crew that hauls refrigerators without recovering the refrigerant is violating federal regulations. Ask any junk removal company whether they perform refrigerant recovery — the answer tells you a lot about their compliance approach.

Everything Else Is Probably Fine

Beyond the categories above, most household items are within the scope of a professional junk removal pickup: furniture, mattresses, electronics, standard appliances, renovation debris in moderate quantities, yard waste, clothing and textiles, exercise equipment, sporting goods, tools, and general household clutter. When in doubt, describe the item when you call — we'll tell you whether it's within our scope or needs a different disposal path.
